Why Are My Tires Making Noise?

There are a lot of great cars that provide smooth, quiet rides through many years of reliable use. Sometimes, though, you notice unusual sounds coming from the front, rear, or both axles. That typically means your tires have undergone some changes. There are many causes of noisy tires, but nearly all of them have remedies. Those that do not require a
tire replacement
, because your tires have been damaged in some way.
You likely already know different road surfaces cause your tires to react differently. Some, like those with rain grooves, will produce loud tire noise while you drive across the unusual surface. You probably are familiar with those kind of sound inputs, and know there is no need for concern. When the odd sounds of your tires become more consistent, though, the following usually are the causes for why your tires are making noise.
Abnormal Wear
Your tires undergo differing levels of wear and tear throughout the year. Your front tires in particular undergo certain wear, due to changing lateral forces and inputs from turning and steering the car. Differing
tire pressures
can also have a big difference in how your tires wear over time. Sooner or later, you need to rotate them to the rear to even out the tire wear. Many people, though, ignore simple tire rotation and tire pressure maintenance. This leads to abnormal tire wear, and oftentimes loud tire noise
Damaged Tires
Your tires also can suffer damage that might cause loud tire noise. If you strike a
curb or pothole
, a slight tread separation or other damage might cause noisy tires. Damaged tires can create different types of noise. Some can be more like a hopping sound, when the damaged spot repeatedly rolls across the roadway. Others might cause harmonic changes that sounds like your tires are singing – or at least playing an off-key noise. The potential causes of damaged tires are many, but the solutions usually are the same – simple tire replacement.
Alignment Issues
Tires sometimes produce noise because your car has a problem with the suspension and steering systems. Those can cause alignment issues, which lead to your
wheels not truly traveling exactly the same. When you have an alignment issue, one or more wheels are not contacting the road surface properly. That can cause an odd, loud tire noise. It also can make your tires wear unevenly and reduce your tire life. Fixing your front end will put an end to the noise. A
tire rotation
will help to even out the tire wear, too.
Simple Fixes
If you are experiencing noisy tires, we have certified and experienced staff on hand to make it right. There is no need to endure loud tire noise when simple fixes usually are at hand.
